Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP hosted a reception in the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle "in celebration of Catholic Education in Europe" on Friday 8th October 2010.
She welcomed, among the guests, representatives of twenty seven European countries from a wide cross section of those involved in the provision of Catholic education, including parent organisations, headteachers, directors of education and officials. She also welcomed teachers and Head Teachers from Catholic schools, including some of the participants in St Ninians' Day Parade celebrations on the first day of the recent Papal visit to Scotland.
Mis Sturgeon reaffirmed the Scottsh Government's commitment that "denominational schools will remain as a part of the state school sector as we believe that faith schools add to the rich tapestry that is the Scottish nation".
She expressed her pleasure at hosting the reception and hoped "our European guests have and will continue to enjoy our famous Scottish hospitality during their stay and that those here from Scotland enjoy the recognition of their recent efforts afforded by tonight’s reception".
