The Scottish Catholic Education Service would like to thank everyone in schools and parishes throughout Scotland, as well as colleagues in England, for all their efforts to celebrate the Papal Visit. We realise that this has involved very considerable efforts by many people in recent weeks. We are sure that all this work will pay huge dividends in the interest and excitement of young people over the next few days.
We hope that you have found the SCES website to be a useful source of information on various aspects of the visit.
As anticipated, there was a huge amount of media interest and coverage of the various events. With the support of Learning & Teaching Scotland, we hope to be able to capture some of this coverage and to offer it as a learning resource in the future.
We also hope that schools have recorded their own activities on digital photos or video which they will be willing to share with colleagues on the SCES website. To find out how to do this, read this item. Please send us some stories and photographs.
Before the visit, our prayer was that everyone would be able to enjoy a very joyful few days ‘in the company of’ Pope Benedict XVI. We thank God that so many people across the UK were able and willing to offer a warm welcome and open hearts and minds to greet the successor of Peter.

Many congratulations to SCES from John Ogilvie on the co-ordination of the Scottish Event. To paraphrase Mark Twain, news of the death of faith in this country has clearly “been greatly exaggerated”. The legacy of this visit will have an impact far greater than that of John Paul – he has met the dissenters head-on on a whole number of key issues but he has also engaged with the people and the youth in particular, in a way that few expected and to a degree that has completely wrong-footed the detractors. This is a real boost for the Catholic community and for Catholic Schools in particular.

A big thank you to SCES for the wonderful resources we used to prepare our children for the Papal visit. We were very fortunate to be able to join our parish for the trip to Bellahouston and a wonderful and memorable day was enjoyed by all 39 children and adults who travelled with St Stephen's, Coatbridge. Favourite snapshots of the visit for me are:
The walk from Albion street with our school banner - being cheered and smiled at by throngs of pilgrims.
The inclusion of our dvd on the big screens - the reaction of our children as it played was fab!
Hearing the children shout and cheer as the Holy Father made his way through the park.
Taking part in a beautiful Mass with children who were calm and serene and sang their hearts out...
and finally Pope Benedicts words to the children at Twickenham were simple and awe inspiring - assembly tomorrow will be a powerpoint of his words and our photographs - thank you to all involved - truly memories to last a lifetime!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone in SCES for their expertise and dilligence in organising the wonderful day yesterday at the start of the Papal Visit to the UK that we all will celebrate and remember for a lifetime. Well done to everyone.
Helen Massaro, HT St. Ninian's RC PS, Edinburgh
Many thanks for all the support from SCES during preparations for the Papal Visit. The work done by the SCES team has been magnificent and thoroughly professonal as usual!
As has been the case on so many other occasions, you have made it easy for us in schools with the level of detail provided on the range of actions required by schools!
We all look forward now to a joyous day together and I hope you both get a well earned rest sometime soon!
Gerry McCormick, HT Taylor High School, Motherwell
Thanks to SCES for all the encouragement and support for this great event. We’re really looking forward to spending the next few days with Benedict - actively and interactively.
Tony McBride, St Andrew's and St Bride's High School, East Kilbride
To all at SCES - Thank you! Your organisation of the proceedings has been incredible.
Ellen Douglas HT, St Ambrose High School Coatbridge
We have found the materials on SCES website in respect of Papal Visit extremely valuable. We have a number of children attending with their families tomorrow acting as Mass Reporters for our school. We will hold a special Papal assembly tomorrow afternoon (using many of the SCES materials) to celebrate this great event as a school community. Each of our children will receive a commemorative bookmark made by our parents.
Have a great day, everyone.
