Season of Lent 2011

For the season of Lent 2011, Pope Benedict XVI has has asked that Catholics rediscover the meaning of baptism to "liberate the hearts of all selfishness, which impoverishes and prevents us from being available to God and our neighbours."

He said this in his message for Lent, which encourages support for fasting, prayer and charity during the forty day period. The Pope summarises his Lenten message in this way:

The Lenten journey, in which we are invited to contemplate the Mystery of the Cross, is meant to reproduce within us “the pattern of his death” (Ph 3: 10), so as to effect a deep conversion in our lives; that we may be transformed by the action of the Holy Spirit, like St. Paul on the road to Damascus; that we may firmly orient our existence according to the will of God; that we may be freed of our egoism, overcoming the instinct to dominate others and opening us to the love of Christ. The Lenten period is a favorable time to recognize our weakness and to accept, through a sincere inventory of our life, the renewing Grace of the Sacrament of Penance, and walk resolutely towards Christ.

Passionate Voices: a DVD resource pack for Lent

This is a powerful resource which can be used by individuals and by groups in schools and parishes to promote discussion, reflection and prayer. Stephen Callaghan’s play 'Passionate Voices' uses a series of dramatic monologues to explore the thoughts and feelings of eight characters who played a part in the drama of the Passion of Jesus Christ. One DVD provides a video of the entire dramatic production. The Bonus DVD provides interviews with cast and director, the playscript of ‘Passionate Voices’ and much more. A booklet provides resources which promote reflection, discussion and prayer.
